Coronavirus Update From Horizon Family Medicine

We know you have questions about the spread of COVID-19, also called coronavirus.

We want to assure you that we are dedicated to your care, and we have policies, treatments and procedures in place to help you.

Just as important, we want to be sure you have access to resources where you can keep track of the latest developments with the coronavirus.

Where can I find reliable information?
The internet is full of information, but not all of it is reliable or accurate. Therefore, the best resource is the site for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), where you can find extensive facts on the COVID-19 coronavirus. The CDC site is updated regularly, and has information on:

• Symptoms
• How it spreads
• Prevention
• Testing
• Treatment

Another useful source of information is the website for the NC Department of Health and Human Services.

How are patients tested for COVID-19?
If you are experiencing fever, cough, and/or shortness of breath we recommend you call for evaluation. There are two options:

• There is a local helpline you may contact at 1-888-850-2684. You will be screened for symptoms, travel and exposure. After screening you may be directed to go in for evaluation and screening at a clinic dedicated to COVID diagnosis at Johnston Medical Center/UNC in Smithfield.
• Our office also has testing available for COVID19 though the testing capability may be limited day to day until testing kits are more widely available. You may call our office to talk with our staff about your best option (coming into our office vs. contacting the local hotline).

If you are instructed to come to our office for evaluation be aware of the following:

• Place a mask on immediately upon entering and let front desk know symptoms upon checking in.
• If an exam room is not available on arrival, you will be asked to wait in your car until called back for your appointment.

How do I stay safe & reduce my risk?
We understand that the outbreak of the coronavirus is upsetting and can be frightening. For most people, contracting the virus will likely be a mild event – much like the symptoms of the common cold or case of flu. However, we would like to emphasize that the best way to stay safe is to take some basic precautions. These include:

• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
• Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol.
• Avoid close contact with those who are affected. If you do have contact with those who are sick, don’t touch your face until after you have a chance to wash your hands.
